Any diet for any purpose should be based on your digestive health. For the same reason, it’s hard to generalise and say what is good for the skin. For example, if we include more omega-3 fatty acids containing food, chia seeds, flaxseeds, almonds and walnuts, it’s difficult these days for most people to digest them and many end up feeling bloated if they consume more.

Importantly, ask yourself whether you are constipated. Do you have a satisfactory bowel movement? If you are constipated or if you have an incomplete bowel movement, it means you are lodging lots of toxins, which will reflect on your skin and no matter how well you eat, your skin will look dull and lifeless.

Follow a personalised diet depending on your digestive health. For people with apparently healthy digestion, fish such as salmon (not farmed), sardines and moderate amounts of nuts and seeds are good. However, if you have a skin disease, fish is not a good choice according to Indian traditional medicine – most fish aggravate the skin condition. A predominantly vegetarian diet is better.

Citrus fruits, berries and colourful vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli, peppers, cherry tomatoes, pumpkin, carrots avocado and cantaloupe are good in general. Turmeric, a spice used in Asia, is good as an antioxidant. Try to include more of it in the diet.

Top up salads and soups with a good amount of olive oil. Include green juice every day with cucumbers, celery, green apple, a handful of parsley or spinach or bitter guard. Reduce sweets (other than natural sources), white flour products, animal fat, meat, etc.
